Wedding Dress Sale !

Don't fret, you didn't miss the grand opening at The White Dress. We will absolutely announce that in this blog (and Facebook and Twitter). This sale is coming to you from The Breast Dress Project which is something else Marry Me has our hand in ;)

If you didn't already know, The Breast Dress Project (TBDP) was a labour of love created by Jamie Johnston of Groovy Linen
http://www.groovylinen.com/ and Stacey Price of Marry Me Productions.
Jamie was diagnosed with breast cancer at the young age of 33. Jamie endured chemotherapy for almost all of 2009 and in December when she finished her treatment, TBDP was launched as one of the many ways Jamie and Stacey are giving back- trying to make a difference in the lives of women.

The idea is you can drop off your gently used wedding dresses which TBDP will sell to current brides-to-be, giving the profits of each dress sale to The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation which raises money to fund research to find a cure for breast cancer.

It doesn't get any better than that: you're saving money, you're helping a fellow bride find her dream dress, you're being 'green' and your money is going to a great charity.

October is breast cancer awareness month so in honour of this, TBDP will be having a SALE on their current inventory on October 10 2010 (get it; 10-10-10).

The sale will take place at Groovy Linen's warehouse at 19 Grenfell Crescent (unit 12) from 9am-noon.

More exciting news! In anticipation of Something White for Something Right http://www.somethingwhite.ca/, TBDP will be 'renting' out their wedding dresses for $100 each for the evening, of course with all profits going to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

So if you're a new bride looking for your wedding dress, or a guest of Something White this year, stop by Groovy Linen on Sunday October 10 from 9am-12pm to find the dress for you. The most exciting news of all ?? With every purchase, we're one step closer to finding a cure for breast cancer.

For more information on TBDP visit their website http://thebreastdressproject.ca/ or listen to Jamie and Stacey explain its importance in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqrUuKUGFww

Looking forward to seeing everyone there !

How to handle a rainy wedding day

You've got everything ready for the big day, and everything is going smoothly. Then, oh no! It starts to rain! Of course, they say a rainy wedding day brings good luck, but who wants to deal with that kind of weather?

Here are some tips to help you have a fabulous wedding, even if it rains:

  • Having an outdoor ceremony? Be sure there is a tent set up and some umbrellas available for guests.
  • Have a trusted bridesmaid, friend or relative carry a "rainy day kit." Include bobby pins, hairspray, makeup and any other necessities that will help you refresh your look if you get rained on.
  • If the weather is really bad, think about getting dressed at the ceremony venue rather than at home or in your hotel room. It will be easier for you to maintain your look.
  • If you're taking your dress anywhere, be sure to use double plastic covers to protect it.
  • Wait until the absolute last minute to put on your shoes. You don't want them to get muddy. Another option: If you're having an outdoor ceremony, you could walk down the aisle in colorful, cute rain boots.
  • Contact your vendors, and be sure they are ready for potential rain.
  • Have a few ushers escort guests who might not have umbrellas. They will appreciate it.
  • If you're getting married at a country club or a similar venue, ask if you can use an indoor banquet room instead of a patio. If the weather doesn't look too good, some venues might be very willing to accommodate you.
  • Wear waterproof makeup.
  • Keep this French saying in mind: "Mariage pluvieux, mariage heureux," a wet wedding means a happy marriage!

New ways to decorate your home this fall

Fall is here, and that means it might be time to do some redecorating at home. Here are some ideas to consider:
  • Trade your current accessories for rich, vibrant and trendy items. Sandra Espinet, an interior designer based in Los Cabos, Mexico and Los Angeles, CA, suggets getting rid of the summer white. Also, you can purchase inexpensive throw pillows or slipcovers for bigger furniture pieces; Espinet says slipcovers are excellent for changing with the seasons.
  • Paint the walls of your living room, dining room and kitchen a warm color that's inspiring and exciting. Use more than one shade to pull the look together. Additionally, using texture keeps more modern furniture from looking too harsh, and it adds depth to an area.
  • Place a hand-knit thick throw blanket over an oversized armchair. You could also use pillows and blankets in fleece, wool or flannel. A mix-matched look is 'in' now, and you'll create a great place for reading.
  • Using u-shaped setups divide large rooms and help you create cozy settings. Additionally, if you have a fireplace, place your furniture so it faces it.
  • Surround yourself with photos of the ones you love or images of places you want to visit one day. Fill your home with your favorite items, ones that you've made and/or collected throughout your life.

Do You Need A Wedding Rehearsal?

The need for a wedding rehearsal depends on how large you’re planning to have your bridal party. if there will be more than the bride, groom and 2 witnesses standing up there before the Officiant the answer is “yes”, especially if there will be children as flower girls or ring bearers.

If possible, hold the rehearsal only a day or 2 before the wedding so that it’s still fresh in everyone’s mind. You’ll have enough to do on your special day without adding in the rehearsal the morning of. On site is best, of course. But a similar setting will suffice in a pinch. If you are using an alternate site draw a diagram or floor plan of the actual setting and give a copy to all participants so they’ll have a mental image of the scene.

Who should attend? The bride, groom, their parents, grandparents, bridesmaids, groomsmen, (ushers) best man, best lady (maid or matron of honor) flower girls, ring bearers, Officiant and event planner. If there are children involved, have adult supervision for them both at the rehearsal and wedding in case the children need a quite place to rest.

First I’ll give you the traditional procession line-up and then current happenings.

The groom’s family and friends sit on the right. The bride’s on the left. Both front rows are saved for the parents and grandparents of the bride and groom.

Order of entrance after all guests have been seated is:

  • Grandmothers and mothers are escorted by usher or groomsman.
  1. Grandmother of the groom – followed by grandfather
  2. Grandmother of the bride – followed by grandfather
  3. Mother of the groom – followed by groom’s father
  4. Mother of the bride
  • Officiant, groom and best man (if no side access available)
  • Bridesmaids escorted by groomsmen
  • Flower girl(s) and ring bearer
  • Best Lady (maid or matron of honor)
  • Bride escorted by her father

That’s the traditional way but you could do it any way you like. It’s your wedding. If you’d like the girls to walk in single file then the groomsmen would stay in the front after they sat the grandmothers and mothers or enter from the side.

The bride could be escorted by the groom, her mother, step-father, brother, uncle, sister, grandmother, aunt or walk in alone. The bride could change partners part way down the aisle.

The Officiant could be escorted by the groom. The groom could escort his mother.

Some personal suggestions of my own:
Bride walks on the right of her escort and stops at the end of the front row of seats. As the groom steps forward to meet his bride, the father kisses the bride. The father shakes the groom’s hand and then steps to his left to sit. This way the father is free of the bride’s train. The groom offers his arm or hand to the bride and together they step forward to the Officiant.

When small children are involved they are usually more comfortable sitting rather than standing through out the whole procedure. Show them where they will sit and by whom they will sit. This will be the adult that is responsible for the care and comfort of the child.

Very young children could be walked in by a bridesmaid or the maid or matron of honor. I’ve been in weddings where the couple did not take this into consideration and a father or bystander carried the child down the aisle. Needless to say, the man was not prepared nor dressed for the occasion and it was very awkward.

If you don’t have a wedding or event planner, have someone who can help at the rehearsal and the day of the wedding who will signal each person when to walk, open doors for the bridal party (if applicable) and signal the processional music.

A few other miscellaneous items about “the walk”:
  • Each person simply walks to the music rather than step-touch-step-touch. A natural step is more relaxed and less taxing.
  • Flowers are carried at the waist/stomach area and not flopped down in front of “you know what”.
  • The gentleman, who is escorting a lady, bends his proffered arm at the elbow and his forearm gently rests in front of his waist. That looks better than letting the arm dangle.
  • And the last thing is – smile! If you look happy you’ll feel happy.
